Carpet

When making your carpet selection, there are three things to remember: fiber, twist and density. Durability of your new carpet is directly tied to these three characteristics.

Carpet fibers or filaments are spun into yarn and twisted upon themselves, and locked in place. The tighter the twist, the more the carpet will resist changes in appearance and texture.

Density is a description of the amount of pile in the carpet and how close the tufts are to one another. In general, the more dense the carpet, the better the quality.

  • Nylon 6.6 yarn is ideal for most carpet applications. It is water, soil and stain resistant and offers the widest range of color, pattern and style. Stainmaster fiber (along with new Tactesse fiber) will provide your family with the most durability and stain resistance.

  • Natural Wool carpeting is luxurious and lasting. Wool usually costs a little more at the time of purchase, however, it provides a lasting value superior to other types of carpeting. Wool is non-allergenic, does not promote the growth of dustmites or bacteria and gives off no harmful emissions. Wool carpet is naturally flame retardant, offers long-term appearance retention and does not crush or break down under use as man-made carpet fiber will do eventually.

  • Polyester is a synthetic fiber derived from coal, water and petroleum. Polyester carpet has some advantages over traditional fibers, its low absorbency also makes it naturally resistant to stains.

  • Olefin-Polypropylene carpet fiber resists wear and most stains, and is easily cleaned. Olefin carpet is notably colorfast because the color is added in the fiber production process. Olefin resists static electricity and is often used in both indoor and outdoor installations because of its resistance to moisture and mildew. It is used in synthetic turf for sports surfaces and in the home for patio and game rooms. Many Berber carpets are made of Olefin. About 80% of commercial carpet applications are Olefin carpet.
